Home to the double murder of Andrew and Abby Borden on August 4th, 1892, this home has been a city landmark since that fateful day, as well as has achieved worldwide notoriety. Although eventually acquitted, Lizzie, the proper, 32-year-old daughter of Andrew and step-daughter of Abby, was forever branded an axe murderess. And theories abound. No murder weapon was found, yet the media declared it an axe murder. There was no sign of forced entry or struggle, but the maid, Bridget Sullivan, was never charged, and Lizzie was acquitted. At first, the townspeople rallied to Lizzie’s support–the Women’s Temperance League, the suffragettes, the local minister–all attended the trial. Jury deliberation lasted less than an hour. And then after the trial, most of the people of Fall River turned their backs on Miss Borden. Martha M cGinn’s grandparents bought the sprawling four-level house in 1947, and she lived with them there as a teen.
When she inherited the house in 1994, she wanted to do something special with it. A year-long restoration followed, duplicating the decor and furnishings of the era with the help of Borden crime scene photos. Air conditioning had already been added, as well as bathrooms (forbidden by the frugal Andrew Borden), though only one guest room has a private bath. The result: the house chillingly resembles what it was like on that infamous August morning. Though none of the furniture is from the original crime scene, the feel is definitely 1890s Victorian, right down to the replica of the dark blue velvet sitting room sofa where Andrew Borden was found dead.
This Ghost Hunter University series begins on Friday evening, June 6th, 2008 with our popular Ghost Hunting 101 seminar. This seminar covers the basics of ghost hunting, from ghost hunting protocol, to equipment used in t he field, to definitions and examples of positive and negative evidence. Following this seminar, dinner will be served to attendees, and will include a haunted history lesson and tour of the Lizzie Borden house. An interactive paranormal investigation of the property follows, and the night is completed with an evidence sharing and wrap-up session after the investigation. The following night, June 7th, 2008 we offer our more in-depth Ghost Hunting 102 seminar. This seminar allows attendees to learn more about the paranormal, as we delve deeper into its realm. Shadow People, demons, and elementals are discussed, and how to interpret EVP is also a focus during this seminar.
As with our Ghost Hunting 101 event, a dinner follows the seminar. Following dinner, guests will be broken down into groups, and one or two guests, per group, will be given the opportunity to lead a team on a paranormal investigation of the Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast! Our classic evidence sharing and wrap-up session concludes our event, and guests will receive certificates of completion for their hard work! As always, The Telephone to the Dead a.k.a. Frank’s Box will be used during our investigation.
Cost of this AWESOME Ghost Hunter University series is $99 plus tax per person per event. Accomodations at the Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast are available at an additional cost, but space is LIMITED. You can reach the Lizzie Borden House at
